New Vogue Knitting
Submitted by Kimberly on Mon, 04/13/2009 - 8:39pm.Have you all seen the new Spring/Summer 2009 issue of Vogue Knitting (http://www.vogueknitting.com/)? There is hardly a pattern in it I don't want to knit! DAMN THEM! First on my needles from this book is the "Drop Stitch Scarf" shown on page 64. I have actually knit this scarf once before when I bought the pattern and the Prism Arts "Saki" yarn while visiting my girlfriend Becky in Charlottesville, Va. Becky got the finished scarf for Christmas that year and she always tells me how much she loves it. You can see my Ravelry page on this scarf here (http://www.ravelry.com/projects/Bobo/checks-scarf). Now they have printed the pattern in Vogue and it reminds me of how much fun it was to knit. I want one for ME!!!!
We don't carry Prism at K2Tog, but we do have lots of yarn that would make a stunning scarf. First among them Misti Alpaca's (http://www.mistialpaca.com) new Pima Cotton & Silk Handpaint (http://www.mistialpaca.com/yarns2.php?material_id=48). We have about a half-dozen different variegated blends of this yarn and one skein will make the scarf with a few minor changes. First, instead of casting on 60 stitches, cast on 55. Then, when the pattern says to K6 or P6, just K5 or P5. This makes this a project that costs less than $20.
Of course, you can always make a stole, as Ellen is doing with this same pattern and two skeins of Pima Cotton & Silk in the "Fairy Tale" colorway. To do this, she has cast on 90 stitches, instead of 60, and repeated the set up row until she ran out of cast on stitches.
And if you don't like the Misti Alpaca cotton/silk blend, any of the sock, fingering or DK weight yarns we carry will make a great version of this scarf. The key is that the yarn be variegated. Come on in and see what we have and get help with the set-up row, if you need it. We also have copies of the magazine for sale.
