This is a book that will appeal to your inner science geek. Gaughan, a designer's designer, looks to patterns created by Mother Nature – waves, hexagons, phyllotaxis, spirals, fractals and pentagons – and allows them to inspire her to design garments and accessories for men, women and children. The book is divided into six sections – one for each type of natural pattern – and includes a solid discussion of how and why they occur in nature. The section on Fibonacci numbers is especially interesting, as many knitters know and use this pattern but may not know its roots in botany and math. A couple of the garments are a little weird – more exercise in design than actual effort to create an appealing garment (see Cowl Pullover, page 79 and Mosaic Shrug, page 65), but most feature Gaughan's trademark originality in stitch and texture. – Kimberly Ligocki
