Fair Isle Basics

Fair Isle Knitting uses two colors in the same row of knitting. You will learn how to hold one yarn in each hand, or both yarns in the same hand.

Traditionally, Fair Isle is worked in the round. When you are making a cardigan or other open garment, steeks are added, allowing you to CUT your knitting. As a part of the class, the instructor will demonstrate knitting, preparing, and cutting a steek. This class will get you ready for the Fair Isle Mittens class in November.

You will learn how to knit with two colors, read color charts and work steeks into your project. You will see how to prepare your knitting for cutting the steek.

This is an intermediate class. You must be able to knit comfortably in the round.

Materials: 100 yards each of two or more contrasting colors DK or fingering weight yarn (traditional for Fair Isle), US size 5 needles for knitting a small circular item (double points, Magic Loop, or 2 Circulars)

Taught by Janie Cavalli.
